October 2026

It's October, and the days are warm, nights are cool, and the leaves are mostly changed and looking amazing. The mailbox is a flurry of ads for political candidates; the internet is full of ads for political candidates. I've already voted for the leftest, and most liberal folks on the ballot and will continue to do so. They are not as left or as liberal as I'd like, but I'll take what I can get. I basically vote for the most humanist of the bunch that actually has a chance at winning. That's it.

It's Halloween month, so I have watched a few spooky movies.

I kicked off October with a squelch and watched the latest brutal installment of the Evil Dead series. Evil Dead Rise. Like all the recent Evil Dead movies, they are not fun like the originals, but they are gnarly, bloody, and pretty entertaining.

I also watched The Wicker Man 1973 - a lot more naked people than the edited version I watched as a kid on a Saturday afternoon. I remember thinking the people in the village were the messed-up ones, and that has now flipped, and the policeman is clearly the one who is messed-up.

I watched Undertone expecting a bit more than it delivered. It was a creepy podcast, listening to recordings. Kinda creepy but not great. Expected a bit more to happen.

I started watching the new series Carrie and Crystal Lake and only a couple of episodes in. Both seem like superhero or super bad guy origin stories. We'll see where they go. So far, so good.

The only books getting read a lot are the Dungeon Crawler Carl series. They are entertaining, grisly, and gross, and at some point I'm going to be done with these books and ready to read something else.

I'm also reading Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, and Jen picked me up a copy of New England Legends and Folk-Lore by Samuel Adams Drake that will go well with my Hellbore magazines. Gotta love historical inspiration.

For writing, I started working on notes for a new story. This one may be one that goes beyond a short story. We'll see. The last story I had notes for just kind of stopped. That happens. It didn't even get a chapter. It just got caught up in a loop, and I lost it. There's always a chance it'll come back or blend into another story, but that's how it works.

I also published that short story I was going to read at Quiet City Books as a zine. Something came up, and I didn't end up at the reading, but I got a short story out of the preparation process, so still a win.

That's it for October - Remember to vote. Vote with people in mind and not Corporations.

Have a  Happy Halloween

This is a picture of this weekend's project. We hung a new fence because the old one has been rotting and busted up for the past few years. Only a little blood was sacrificed when Jen's cut on her finger reopened, and I tripped on the planter while trying to kick loose a piece of fence and trashed my shin.
