October 2024

It's October, the month everything gets a bit darker, the spooky month, the month it gets cold in Maine and I start thinking of things to do inside by a warm fire.

When I was a kid and lived in apartments, landlords did not have to turn on the heat until November 1st, so it was always a little cold in October. I'm pretty sure that's changed now. If you want the temperature to be less than 68 degrees, you have to work out a special deal with the landlord, and littles, 5 and under, or older folks 65 and older can't live there. I think that counts as progress, right?

This month I watched the updated release of Salems Lot. It felt like one of the made-for-TV Stephen King movies from the 90s with a little more budget and a little bit like the most recent series of The Stand. Not horrible, I like that it’s set in what could be the late 70's or early 80's.. the two movies playing at the theatre. Drowning Pool and Night Moves came out in 1975

Trap, the new M. Night Shyamalan, was terrible but entertaining.

It's What's Inside, A new film on Netflix. Not really a horror but kind of a technologic body swapping thriller.

Honestly, I planned on watching a lot more scary movies this month. they exist

I watched a weird two-episode scary cake bake-off show hosted by Mathew Lillard and a weird, scariest homes in the US kind of Competition thing. The scariest home gets 20k.

The Monkey, a new movie by Osgood Perkins based on the Stephen King short story looks amazing. You can watch it for yourself here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jfTApWPX7I

I finished reading We Used to Live Here by Marcus Kliewer. It was scary, as is the case with surprise house guests, secret conspiracies, and made to feel like you are losing your mind.

Started reading The Unworthy, the new novel by the writer of Tender is the Flesh, Agustina Bazterrica. It comes out on March March 4th, but I have an advanced reader copy from NetGalley. Dystopian and the story written by a woman in a cell in a convent while the world inside the convent and outside is all kinds of messed up. Like Tender is the Flesh, it's a bit much, but it keeps me reading it.

For Writing? My brain spawned a short story idea and I started writing it. I don't think it'll be great but its a fun idea to write about.

and that's October

This month, there were some intense solar flairs, and the sky went insane. We could see the aurora borealis in town, but with way more reds than greens. There are so many pictures of a red sky, so here's a picture of the comet that we could also see. Perhaps it'll be an inspiration to rewatch Night of the Comet?
