August 2024
It's August, and I had a little downtime from the day job, so I visited a college with myjoyed daughter and en summer in Maine for a week. This is the post, so let's get to it.
A bit about movies
I saw a trailer for a new movie - (Trailer here > Y2K = Maximum Overdrive, but I'll be there for it. For the actual cutover to Y2k, I was sitting in a dentist's chair in a tattoo parlor, where Jen was apprenticing, getting a dragon tattoo on my arm. It was, not quite, but soon to be, the year of the Dragon, and Jen's Chinese Zodiac sign was a dragon. Later that year, we would get married, so I'm glad that worked out. At least it mostly worked out. A few years later, tattooing legend Ed Hardy's dragons started appearing on a bunch of shirts and got really popular, making me regret it a little bit. A little after Y2K, I started working at an office job, and all of the office beige computers had Y2K Ready stickers reminding folks to turn off their computers before 12-31-1999. Since they were still in use when I got there, one could assume they didn't see many issues.
I rewatched Time Bandit's to prep for the series that came out on AppleTV. Worth a rewatch, as I loved the movie as a history-loving kid.
I also rewatched What We Do in the Shadows, the original documentary... Still a solid, serious look at what life is like with roommates.
I'm sure I watched something else, but I can't think of it.
A bit about reading
I finished reading Silver Nitrate by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, and I liked it for a book that seemed to take forever to read. It wasn't that it was slow, badly written, or boring. It had great characters and a fun story about the occult and magic, and it was a little scary. I should have blasted through it, so this is on me and how I was reading, not the book. I liked the book.
I started reading Black Sheep by Rachel Harrison and I'm looking forward to see where it goes. So far I'm liking the setup and the characters.
A bit about writing
This was a writing month! I didn't start a new novel, but after connecting with JBad, an actual brother from another mother, over coffee and talking about writing, we decided to get some writing in. It was a good kick for me. The only guideline was that it had to be something new and at least 3000 words. I wrote an almost 4000-word short story that I'm editing now. It's a little scary, so kind of how I like them. My only plan now is to share it with Jeromy and read what he wrote this month.
I have also been meditating twice a day for the past 30 days, and it's helped me realize a few things about writing. I write when I feel good, and then I feel better when I'm writing, like eating well and exercising.
That's August
I have just 2600 followers on Threads (I blocked a few more Nude'y bots). One day, I will share more than just links to my monthly updates. If interested, follow me here and help me fight the Nude'y bots. https://www.threads.net/@shawnpatrickwhite
