May 2021

May has been a fairly uneventful month in my writing world, with a couple of exceptions.

First - I now have over 1500 followers on Twitter - I think my goal for the year was 2000 so that if an agent were looking, they would see that I am fairly engaged with some kind of community, so if I post something, it may get some attention.

I have been able to make a little progress on the automation story. Hopefully, it's easier to read than it is to write, but to be honest, it hasn't received a lot of attention. I have not been taking the time to write, and the excuse could be that I have been working a lot, which has my focus. While that's true, it's not an excuse.

What am I doing with my time? I have not been reading more. I stopped reading a book I thought was interesting, but it turned out it was not interesting for me. I could not spend my time in a book where the main character was a crow during a zombie invasion.

I did start reading a fantasy series by Patrick Rothfuss, The Kingkiller Chronicle. The first book is the Name of the Wind. This is not usually my genre of choice. Still, a novella in the series came with high recommendations by a beta reader, and further research has many people and publications claiming it's one of the best book series out in the world. It's been pretty good so far, and I hope it's as good as they say.

Another win this month was my favorite reader of all time; Jen, my wife, finished reading a novella I finished earlier this year and had tucked aside. I was waiting for her input before I tackled the editing of it. It needs a pretty heavy edit, but I made her laugh, and that's all the motivation I need.

As I head into June, I hope to finish the automation story and maybe get a good chunk of editing in, but life is shaping up to be even busier than May, so to make that happen, I have to make it a priority. But, of course, if it doesn't happen, then I didn't make it a priority, and that's ok.

Goals for the month:

  • Write a little every day - even if it's just 100-200 words
    • That includes writing on the new story, editing and rewriting an old story, or working on June's blog post.
  • Read a little every day - for enjoyment
    • Websites and social media does not count
      • The news and new things will be there at the end of the month

And that's it—That's it and that how I write. I constantly have to refocus and spend a little time thinking about things that are not part of my world. So tapping into this creativity that sometimes feels like a chore is a good exercise for the brain, and it makes my life a little more enjoyable when I can keep it up.

I'll let you know how it went in June's blog post.

Thanks for reading, here's a picture of some flowers I took today
